Chibok girls: Group demands rescue mission status
The #BringBackOurGirls# movement has urged the Federal Government to make the status of rescue mission of over 200 kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls known to parents, family members of the abducted girls and Nigerians. Deputy National Mobilisation leader of the movement, Yusuf Sheriff Banki, at a press briefing yesterday in Maiduguri, Borno State capital said though the movement did not doubt the efforts of the Nigerian government to rescue the abducted schoolgirls, Nigerians deserved to know the level of success of the rescue mission. He said government was not giving any information about the level of success made.
“We are demanding for the status of the security operation to bring back the Chibok schoolgirls because the Nigerian government is not giving any information about the level of success and efforts made in rescuing the Chibok girls,” he stated. He added that the movement was equally concerned about others abducted by the insurgents. He said the movement for the mobilisation of Nigerians and the entire world to rescue the schoolgirls was still alive, adding that the movement would not rest on its oars to persuade government to act responsively by ensuring the rescue of the kidnapped teenagers. He said the movement was worried that government was engaged in blame game rather than concentrating on the mission to bring back the girls.
Banki said the movement was worried about the escalation of Boko Haram attacks in Borno, Abuja and some parts of the North.
“What we have seen however, is an escalation of frequent attacks on Nigerians with more mass killings, more abductions and mass destruction of property in every part of the state and other places. Please, they should stop blaming anybody and protect Nigerians. Nigerians should also support government’s efforts to end insurgency and terrorism in the country because we don’t have another country,” he added.
Advising the government to liaise with local communities to get credible information to ease the finding of the abducted girls, Banki called for increase in the number of security personnel and equipment to hasten the rescue mission.
He also urged Nigerians to be united in ensuring the return of the abducted girls, adding that such unity of purpose exhibited by residents of Maiduguri since last year in chasing away Boko Haram insurgents could also be embraced to restore normalcy to the troubled area.
