Ebola: Nigeria records fifth death
As female consultant physician succumbs to killer virus
The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, yesterday night
announced the death of one of the primary contacts of the Ebola Virus
Disease (EVD) index case, the most senior doctor, who participated in
the management of the patient, a female consultant physician. He said
with this unfortunate development, the total number of Ebola virus
related deaths in Nigeria now stood at five. He said the other two
patients currently under treatment in the isolation wards were stable
and being taken care of.
Dr. Stella Adedavoh was said to be the most senior and first doctor
to attend to the Liberian Patrick Sawyer, who died in her hospital in
Lagos.
Adadevoh was an endocrinologist at First Consultant Hospital, Lagos, who treated Sawyer as he was rushed from the airport to her hospital.
Her case had led to a petition from colleagues and well-wishers, urging President Barack Obama of the United States of America to release ZMapp for her treatment. Adadevoh (nee Cardoso) was discharged from the hospital on Monday after fully recovering from the disease according to doctors at the facility.
The health ministers had, on Monday, announced that four additional confirmed cases of EVD had been managed successfully and were now disease free and consequently discharged home.
The four previous deaths in Nigeria were the index case, Sawyer, two health workers, and an ECOWAS protocol officer.
