All over the world on Sunday morning, groggy-eyed international readers woke up, got a cup of coffee, and went for either their favourite newspaper or electronic device. Whether they were glancing at a front page or a home page, one piece of news was nearly ubiquitous — FC Barcelona’s historic victory in the UEFA Champions League.

It is rare to see a single sporting event make front-page news on multiple continents, but that’s exactly what happened on 7 June 2015, as the Catalan club’s record-breaking Saturday evening had deep appeal from Berlin to Buenos Aires.

Argentina lauded Lionel Messi, Brazil cited the role of Neymar, and scores of other outlets unanimously hailed the team’s unprecedented achievements.
